Diversity Group meeting 1

Date: Friday 18th July 2008
Time: 12.30 to 1pm
Venue: Breakfast Room at Monks Abbey School, Lincoln

This was the first meeting of parents in Monks Abbey School that represent the ten nationalities resident in the Abbey Ward area.

Liz Gray (EAL co-ordinator) and Ruth O'Sullivan (TEN Project Manager) worked to send a welcoming letter out to the parents of all nationalities. This invited them to attend this first meeting and discuss how they could support the project TEN with cultural research.

The response was fantastic! We were fortunate to have;

Malaysian parents - Li Shing Wong and Sek Pei Lim
Taiwanese community worker - Angel Jackson
4 Polish parents:
Aymeiszka Zieba
Aneta Bil
Barbara Slyz
Zuzanna Ihitton
Bulgarian parent - Zhiuka Rhadeva
TEN Project Manager - Ruth O'Sullivan
Community Musician - Liam Robinson

There were no obvious translation needs and it was relatively easy to discuss the ideas behind forming the group.

Bulgarian workshops
Bulgarian parent - Zhiuka Rhadeva offered to help with cultural research by connecting us with Bulgarian musicians.

Chinese workshops
Taiwanese community worker - Angel Jackson offered to connect us with a Chinese musician in Lincoln. Angel also offered to demonstrate Chinese lettering to children in workshops to compliment the project.

However Zuzanna offered to encourage their interest in the project again and see if they would help out in other areas such as baking cakes for playtimes - in order to encourage team spirit and provide a small amount of fundraising.
The Malaysian parent Sek Pei Lim also offered to provide some recipes and baking for fundraising purposes

Bulgarian workshops
Zhuika Radeva (Bulgarian parent) and musician Kathy Berg arranged a date to meet up and work on Bulgarian music research.

Indian workshops
Musician Brian Pattenden played Indian flutes and brought in some Sitar music books.
